How to make a Collagraph Relief Print

Preparation Choose the best composition from all sheet work. Trace it and transfer it onto thick card (mill board) base. Once image is on the plate decide which areas you want to build up using thin card or cartridge paper cut out shapes. Different textures can also he used it appropriate. The surface needs to be slightly built up into layers which show relief. It is important not to build up too high as you find that your plate does not register when printed. Make sure that all objects and surfaces on the plate are placed and sealed with PVA. When your satisfied with the results, put a white coat of emulsion or gesso on top. Once dried, coat it with clear vanish to seal the top of plate. Then at this point you can add extra texture using salt or sand grains. Printing . Prepare and dampen paper in water, roll it between layers of blotting paper. . Ink plate. Rough paint brushes can be used to push the ink into the groves. . Use rag or newspaper to wipe off excess ink and slightly polish the plate. . Place your plate onto clean newsprint on the center of printing bed. . Cover with damp paper, sheet of newsprint and blanket on top. . Wind through the printing bed without stopping. . Allow print to air dry by placing it on the drying rack. Healthy & Safety . Use apron to protect clothes. . Rubber gloves to be worn when working with ink. . Long hair or any scarfs must be tucked away. . Clean all equipment and slabs with vegetable oil or turps using rags . Leave working area clean and tidy.
