'FMP' Evaluation - Unwanted Beauty

The start of this project, my focus was to look and research into collage artists. Last two years in my previous projects, I have always been curious on how people create collages and what makes them so interesting to look at.

Beginning of my research was simple and easy, by searching online and looking at various collage artists for my secondary research. I came across two artists; Sandhi Schimmel Gold and Samuel Price. I did struggle on how my primary research at home, which was to take photographs of my dogs and family members. This fits into both of my chosen artists, with Sandhi collaging portraits of humans and Samuel portraits dogs. Once my photographs were taken, I would then sketch them out into my sketchbook before collaging.

Developing my research, I viewed many websites to receive the best and possible facts about my chosen artists. Also, to push my primary research a little further. I looked into 'photo editing', using apps such as; be funky, fotor and pixlr. There were many backgrounds, effects, text and colours you could add to your images.

The elements I proceeded with was the style, these two artists use to create their work. Such as; Sandhi creates her work by using a painting version of her image, then proceeding with collating on top. However, Samuel uses square paper. To help him, find the shape and the size on how he wants his portrait.

In my opinion the constraints for me, throughout this project was money and timing. Most of the scrap paper was used from unwanted materials in my classroom. And the other half was bought; I could have bought  more of my own resources. With some of the materials I used in my classroom, weren't enough and some of the colours I needed wasn't there. So I would say, I did struggle and could have produced better portrait collages. Showing people the best of my creativity. Furthermore, my timing wasn't good even though I have managed to create my final pieces. Because half of the time, I began to panic that I would not get my work completed. But with that time I could have created some samples in the workshop.

Mostly my experimentation was using different materials and styles on my collages. Like; buttons, textured paper and a hole punched to create a different shape. The skills required in photography, when needed to edit a photo using the various options. Like; effects, backgrounds, text and size.

At the start of the project, I was told there weren't any sketchbook or any folders. I preferred to buy my own equipment for this project. With it being the last and final project. Visiting many stores, I finally managed to buy all the equipment I needed.

My chosen artists influenced me a lot, seeing how easy these artists create their work. Including the time and patience they have, which fascinates me knowing you can create something so amazing. Furthermore, they both use the same shape for collaging their portraits 'Square'. And then form their portraits together, like a jigsaw.

Working a lot through my sketchbook and creating some great places. I have always wanted to create pieces of work on canvases. Especially, looking back to last year when I created a painted canvas. Looking back to the time and patience I used on that canvas was worth it. Instead of using an A3 canvas, like the one I used last year. I wanted to stay small and original. Especially, with my media being 'collage', I didn't feel positive of creating a big piece. Secondly, I looked through my.photographs of my dogs and family members on my mobile phone. Eventually, I chose two, outstanding photos. They have a good, clear background. Focusing well at the camera, also in my opinion these photos would look great in art.

Not forgetting my blog, I kept my blog going throughout this project and well up to date.

Overall, I did challenge myself with this project. Because the timing and patience you need for this type of media. I am very happy with the work, I have produced. I strongly believe I have done well, for this type of project. I would improve on creating some sample work. And possibly add more detail on the collage itself. Making sure people would know what I am showing in my work.

Things I would do differently would be, to not only collage but paint instead. For example; one canvas showing a painting or painted version and the other in collage.

Unwanted Beauty

Beginning of this project, I didn't have no idea what to base my FMP on. So I tried to think of the media and style, I haven't shown people that I can do. My last project ive shown people, that I can create canvas's and paint in different styles. So I thought about collaging, with making a attempt of using various materials to create outstanding pieces. I looked at a few collage artists such as; Lisa Kokin, Mosaic, Sandhi Schimmel Gold and Rex Ray.

Out of the list of artists, I chose Rex Ray and Sandhi Schimmel Gold. Because Rex Ray's work shows a lot of bright and colourful colours, including the unusual shapes he uses to create these magnificent pieces. He would create and use his own pieces of paper in his work. Furthermore, he always believed that working in a bad light, brings out the colours very well and you can see the piece from together. Along with Sandhi Schimmel Gold, her work is all about using unwanted paper and put them together to create a portrait. Mainly in her work was magazine's and newspapers. Firstly, she would cut up unwanted pieces of paper into square shapes and begin sticking them onto a blank canvas.

When I got all the research, I needed for both of my chosen artists. I started creating some critical studies in my sketchbook. Starting with Sandhi's work, I chosen a image called 'Ghost Horse'. Beginning by sketching out the horse and the background. It did take me 4 attempts to get the horse, actually right. Then once I was satisfied, I started collaging. I am very happy with result, because with it looking actually like the image. Also to say it was a practice, it is a very good piece.

Next, I chose one of her portraits of a model called Twiggy. Sandhi called this piece '1967', various colours was used such as; reds, oranges, pinks, yellow and blue.
To re-create this piece, I started by drawing out the portrait in pencil.there were many attempts of drawing out this image. Because some times the scale of the head wasn't accurate, or the neck and shirt wasn't correct. Eventually, I was happy with the image and then began searching through unwanted pieces of paper. Like magazine's and newspapers, cutting them into square shapes and then sticking them down. On myself imager, it doesn't quite match up to Sandhi's version. Because my version, I have drawn the head a lot longer and chin a bit square. Also swirl patterns were added on top and bottom of the portrait, but instead I left them out with the being small and fine detail to add. Overall, I am pleased and happy with the finished result.

Next, I decided on creating a portrait of myself in Sandhi style of work. To experiment, if the results would try out exactly like Sandhi's style. I looked through many photos of myself, until eventually I found a old photograph from secondary school. Which shows myself, smiling and having my year 11 school photo taken. It has a good and clear background, easy to draw out then collaged on top.
Again I searched through many magazine's, newspapers and any unwanted paper. To cut up into squares and matching the exact image, I am recreating. The background was to be collage first, from there I worked on the hair and rest of the image. Hardest part for me was the skin tone. Because on the image it shows a thew light and dark tones.

After I was starting to get used to collaging. I had to have at least 2 artists sheets. During this time, I was wondering about one of the artists I had chosen, which was Rex Ray. Because with his style of work, I didn't think I could be able to produce that sort of work. So instead I went and searched for another artist. This time I can across a artist called Samuel Price. His work is all based on portraits of pets. He has many fine and outstanding pieces of work. I felt really positive about this artist, with his work based on pets. Which I could do work on myself, with having 2 dogs at home.

Here is my first artist research sheet, about Sandhi Schimmel Gold.
Next is my artist research sheet, about Samuel Price.

Researching and looking more into Samuel's work, I decided to create a piece of one of my dogs. At the time we only just got my second dog Sandy, so I had to take a few photographs of her. Evenetually, I took a photograph which was simple and big enough scale to collage.
At first the photograph had a lot of darkness to it, so i edited it on a app called 'Lumia Creative Studio' which was already based on my phone. Previously, I went and bought various materials at Poundland such as; metallic strips of paper. Reason why I chose these metallic strips, were because they have vibrant colours and excellent textures. Ending results, I am pleased on how effective the image brings with the metallic strips. Furthermore, they show a completely different view on the actually image itself.

Afterwards, I went back and re-created another image of Samuel's work. The piece I chosen is called 'Sunny', which is a border collie dog. Samuel created this piece by using scrap paper. He starts by sketching the image on square paper, so it's easier for him to stick the pieces. I did find this image a little hard to re-create. Because it took at least 2-3 days to finish, also it was hard to find the exact pieces of scrap paper.

Previously, creating a collage portrait of my second dog Sandy. I thought about creating a portrait on my first dog Smudge. This time, instead of taking photos in the ordinal colour. I changed the effect to Black and White. Because I thought about the outlines and a different view of the image, in Black and White which might look great. But then I thought about having a photo of Smudge, in Black and White then showing what the photo would look like in colour. Furthermore, with the image being a smaller scale, I sketched out the image to a bigger scale just showing Smudge. From using magazines and newspaper pieces to collage with, I thought about challenging myself to using a used carrier bag. Using the carrier bag was hard, with the texture being a slippery and crunchy. It was hard to stick the PVA glue onto the pieces of carrier bags, but eventually they managed to stick down and brings out a great texture on my collage.

From all the sketching and collaging, I have been working on. I was told to try a easier option, to save myself time and experiment a little more. The advice I was given was to look at some photographs of portraits. Chose one of those images and then try editing that image, into different effects or possibly collage on top. I viewed and downloaded many apps, that can edit your photos in any form you chose. In my opinion, the best app for editing photos is 'Befunky App'. It has plenty of styles, effects, colours, patterns, borders and text to choose from and add to your photo or photos.

The image I selected is a image of myself, posing and smiling at the camera in my bedroom. Reason why I chose it, was that the image is clear enough. I tried 3 attempts on editing my photo, to make it easier to collage. Here is my first example;

On this image I used the effect called 'Tiles', which has given it a look of collage. But not as good as I thought it would look. Even though this effect shows a similarly look, to how my chosen artists create their work with squares. Next is my second attempt;
This effect is called 'Sketch', which has given the image a ruff outline. But then I thought about adding another effect on top and was curious with the results. So I added another effect 'Charcoal', which gave this finishing look. My final attempt;
Overall, I still wasn't satisfied with the image and how it looked. Until I came across the effect called 'Blur'. This effect blurs out a lot of the black outlines on the image. And gives it a smooth look, which by then I was finally satisfied. Because finally the image is easier enough to start collage on to.   Final result;
I am very pleased with the final result and to say it was a photograph, being collaged on top. Still makes the piece look amazing. It did take a few patience to create, especially in the area of my face. Having to cut small pieces up and shaping them into their positions. I used black card and metallic strips of paper, I didn't collage all of the image. Because I thought I may ruin the image, just by sticking loads of materials on top. So I left areas out, which brings out the image a little more.

Afterwards, I thought about some celebrities I'd like to collage. From working on dogs and family photos. Instead my mum has many photos of Elvis Presley, a.k.a 'The King' of rock n roll. Also, she is a huge fan and I wanted to create a piece for her. Going through many photos, until eventually I found the perfect one. With the King himself, posing directly at the camera. In a bright red jacket, shiny black hair and a nice background setting.
Previously, using the metallic strips on paper. I decided to use them for the background and then any old, scrap paper for the rest of the details.

My choice of second celebrity is Dakota Johnson a.k.a actress and well known for her role 'Anastasia Steele' in 5 shades of grey. Reason why I chose her is because she is a beautiful and inspiring person. And I strongly believe she would look greater, in art.
I went online and viewed loads of photographs of Dakota. Until I found a good image, with her posing and smiling. But looking away from the camera, also the background suits her image.
For this collage I tried a completely, different method. Which was to use a hole punched, instead of cutting up squares or pieces. Pretty much preferred this way, with it saving time and showing a great collage. Similar style to mosiac.

My third choice of celebrity was Robin Williams. Because he was my childhood comedian and a legend throughout. I have seen many of his films such as; Robots, Night of the Museum, Jumanji, Nine Months, Toys and so many more.
Instead of choosing one image, I thought to try and push myself by creating another at the same time. During that time and once I chose my images. I was told to try a different shape and experiment a little more with different hole punches. Top image I used a heart hole puncher and a regular, circle hole puncher for the bottom.

From previous projects, I had loads of calico material left. Calico was used to create my canvas's. And then I had the idea of using calico instead of paper to collage on to. I was curious to find out, if you could stick pieces of paper with PVA glue on the material. Before I started collaging, I had to decide on a photo to work on. Going through my sketchbook, I noticed I haven't done any pieces on either myself or family members. So I looked through my mobile for any family photos, instead I chose a photo of myself and my boyfriend Matthew. It's a really good photo and always makes me smile, when I look at it.
Instead of sticking to Sandhi's and Samuel's method of collaging, which is to cut unwanted pieces of paper into squares. I chose to use a regular hole puncher, which makes a circle shape. Because it's a different shape and small. I stuck to same colours on the image, but it was hard. With the PVA being very liquidity, i did struggle to get the pieces stuck down. Eventually, I managed to finish the collage and was so impressed how it looked. It reminds me of mosaic type of work, I am very pleased with the results and experimenting on different materials.

From there I thought about some sheet work, producing A3 sheets based on artist research and development designs. My first sheet was a moodboard, showing critical studie drawings in the artist chosen media. On my moodboard, it's all collage media with various colours. This moodboard shows work from Sandhi Schimmel Gold. Furthermore, this is my best sheet out of them all.

SecondIy, I decided to create a artist research. My first artist research sheet, I based it on Sandhi Schimmel Gold. Firstly, beginning by collecting images of Sandhi's work. Then, later by drawing her work for critical studies. But I am not very pleased with this sheet. Because in my opinion, it looks a mess and with myself constantly changing, adding things.

My second artist research sheet, based on Samuel Price. This artist research sheet is my best so far. Because the critical studies I drew then later collaged. Which were portraits of dogs, looking very well detailed. I started by adding some coloured, tissue paper to the background. I am very pleased with the results of my sheet, including myself knowing that I can create portraits of dogs.

My last sheet is a development, design sheet. Showing my ideas of various collage styles. Such as; buttons, tissue paper, newspaper, magazine's and metallic strips of paper. The image that is collaged is my two dogs, Sandy and Smudge. I tried showing various ways of collating and how they would look. My favourite is the bottom right, with the circle magazine collage. Giving a mosaic look also a tile. The least favourite is the buttons. Because they don't show the image well enough, also it took a long time to sew them on.

Lastly, here is my chosen photograph I used for my final piece. Showing my nephew Kian, with a big red teddy bear behind him. I chose this photo, cause of how clear it is and a great photo. Before I started collaging, I tried editing the photo. By brightening it up a little and try to add effects onto the photo, which might show a good collage effect.
Furthermore, I tried photocopying different backgrounds such as; newspaper or various collaged backgrounds from the internet. Onto my chosen photo for my final piece.
Previously, I'd bought 2 A5 canvas's which I decided to use for my final piece. Beginning by sticking down the photo, onto the canvas then later  adding background colour. With various metallic strips of paper. Including, shadows and other details needed filling in. But instead I chose to sew buttons onto the canvas.

My last and final anvas, I chose a photo of my second dog Sandy. Perviously, I took a photograph of Sandy. Laying and facing the camera, which is a excellent shot. But the background was dull, so I decided to brighten up the background. From the coloured, pattern paper dividing the background into 3 sections. Similar to Samuel's style of work.
Same as before, I stuck down the image and then collage on top. Keeping Sandy looking the same, by sticking to the colours and depth of the unwanted paper. Furthermore, adding a little more detail using buttons and a hole puncher. To create different styles of collage.

I am very satisfied with this canvas, I strongly believe it's my best work possible. And was a decent size canvas to work on. Hopefully, in the future I will be working on bigger canvas's.

Evaluation Morris & Earle

                                                       Evaluation Morris & Earle

Throughout this project, all my research is Secondary. I took images from websites and learning more about the artists for this project. Such as; http://www.eyvindearle.com/, https://www.william-morris.co.uk/, https://uk.pinterest.com/melsmith97/william-morris-vs-eyvind-earle/. I didn’t go to any exhibitions to look further into my artists and support my research. All my research was based on the Internet. The elements from William Morris’s work that inspired me the most was the colours he chose. The colours were all calm and makes you feel relaxed, when you look at his work in my opinion. At first I didn’t have any idea on what artist to look at, others in my class were going for known artists like Salvador Dali, Peter Blake and Georgia O’Keefe. So I tried to be more creative and go for someone I have never heard of and try to learn new skills with this artist. Eventually, I found an artist called Eyvind Earle. He is well known for his designs in backgrounds for Disney films such as; Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, Working with Peanuts. Some Disney films I didn’t even know about, which I was really impressed. Experimentation I created through this project was Lino printing. I traced an image of William Morris’s work onto the Lino, then cut away the parts that I wanted lighter and to show on the print. I experimented more with coloured Pastels, for a piece from Eyvind Earle’s work. I stretched an A3 board, quickly sketched out the image then began to colour in the image with pastels. It was hard for me to do, with the pastels being messy and smudges your work. So what I did to prevent the smudges from happening, I used some hairspray to spray over the pastel to stop it from messing up my work.

The health and safety, I covered throughout this project was; Always make you’re your area is clean and tidy, before you use it. Including, when using Puff Binder you need to be careful with the heat gun. Because the heat gun can get warm very quickly, also you need to keep some distance between the buff binder and the gun. If you go too close to the buff binder, the heat gun will burn the buff binder. With Lino printing, you need to make sure you have protective clothing. Such as; aprons, gloves and long hair must be tied back. Because the coloured ink will stain your skin and clothing, for a long time. Even when you’re ready to use the roller, to create your print. You must be careful when the turning the wheel to make the print go through. Because you must make sure, the paper is placed down correctly and the cover is down for the print to work. During the peer assessment, I reviewed my feedback and began working on the comments people gave me. Like try to be more creative, especially with experimentation and keep adding missing work. When it came to our customer critiques, the review I received was to experiment more. Which afterwards, I did some more research then started my experimentations. Overall, I do believe that I could have continuing doing more experimentations. My strengths throughout this project, I would say it would be my painting techniques. Because for my final piece I created a canvas, the detail was very hard and the colours I had to mix plenty of times to make sure I had the exact colour. The paints I used was mostly watercolours but with thick detail such as; outlines or brighter colours. To give it more depth and stand out.

I was tired of looking at William Morris’s work. Because his work wasn’t really inspiring me. So I looked more into Eyvind Earle’s work and created a Pinterest board with some of his work. Then, I chose a simple and dark image which was called ‘Grey Mountains.’ On this image it shows two mountains and a bare tree on the left.

The reason why I chose this image. Is because it was a dark piece and I had the idea to add some flower patterns from William Morris’s work to brighten the image up. If I had to do this project again, I would try more experimentations and don’t give up of my ideas. Because there was various times, when I wanted to create something but was afraid that it wouldn’t look good. New skills I would say I have learnt, throughout this project would be experimenting William Morris’s colours. Because his colours was mostly Browns, Greens, Greys, Blues. Furthermore, I learnt more when I began using the buff binder and felt more confident using it.

Things that went well was; my painting of ‘Three Noble Horses’ by Eyvind Earle. This painting is my favourite piece. Because I used brush strokes and created the exact colours as Eyvind used, when he created this piece. My first canvas I created, I designed sheets on how I wanted the canvas to look. On this canvas I used collaging and buff binder. I do think I could have added different media onto the canvas, make it look more creative. But overall, I am happy with it especially with the collaging. I even bought some collage pieces to add onto the canvas. Lastly, my second canvas I am really impressed. Because of the time I put into it and adding all the fine detail around the edges of the canvas. Which by the time I did the first edge, I was ready to give up because my wrist began to hurt. I managed to pull through and continue finishing the canvas. On this canvas my best part would be the mountains in the background. Because with the mountains I blended and mixed Blacks, Grey and Blues to create the shading and colours. Things what went wrong was; myself. Because throughout this project it was getting boring and dragging on. Which made me give up, on creating more sheets and experimentations. When I could have pushed myself a little more on getting these done.

I managed my time well, there was some occasions I began to panic. Because various pieces wasn’t finished and we had to add other pieces in our sketchbooks, folders and other activities. Which I began to think, these would hold me back and I wouldn’t finish in time. But thankfully, we was granted more time to finish our pieces. Plus, I took work home to get them finished such as; canvas’s. Eventually, I completed my pieces even before the deadline. Which I am very happy with myself. Honestly, I don’t think I have met the brief. Because you have to show experimentations and talk about your work. Which I am not confident at doing, I believe I have met the brief at 70%.  Every piece I created throughout this project, I only made sure I took photos and added them onto my blog. I strongly believe my blog is up to a good standard.

William Morris VS Eyvind Earle

Beginning of this project, I started off with creating 2 A3 sheets for my artist research. With these artist research sheets, I tried making them simple as possible. By adding a couple of images of their work that inspire me and then adding a few lines of information about the artist and their work. I do think that I could have added some background colour to my sheets, but instead I drawn a couple of images to fill up some blank spaces. I could work back into my work by drawing more images, make it stand out a little more. Because the images i printed out, are mostly taking over my sheets instead.
Secondly, i began drawing in my sketchbook. Through the 4 weeks, we've started this project i have done more work in my sketchbook. Which i am very pleased about, because with previous projects we have been set. I have always done sheet work. My first page in my sketchbook i started with the title of project, with added sketches to make it look a little interesting.
Afterwards, i began my artist research pages beginning with William Morris. I do think i could go back and make my artist, research pages bit more colourful and outstanding. Because for both pages i drawn one piece of their work then added information about them at the side.
My next page was a piece of work by William Morris, i tried re-creating this piece but unfortunately i gave up very quickly. Because William Morris's work is all about patience, time, colour and neat. I'd managed to draw the flower which is in the middle, but around the flower is leave patterns and a couple of more flowers. During the time i was drawing it, i couldn't handle all the detail shown on image. So i left it, with the flower then added a black background which is shown on the image itself. Looking back at the drawing, i could now re-visit this page and add the detail i have missed off. Overall, i was pleased with the colour and detail i have drawn for the flower.
Next page, is a basic mind map all about William Morris and my chosen artist Eyvind Earle.
Afterwards, i cteated a moodboard with images of Eyvind Earle's work. Some designed on Disney films.
Then, for my next page i found a really intresting, detailed image by Eyvind Earle. The image is a forest, with snow covering most of the forest such as; trees, ground and leaves. It's set in night time, which gives it a great effect in my opinion. Because the snowy scenery is beautiful and Eyvind Earle has created a well detailed piece of work. Which i am proud of myself for re-creating it.
I then moved onto creating a moodboard for William Morris's work. Again, i chose a couple of images which really caught my eye.
Working through this project, i've started to take alot of intrest in Eyvind Earle's paintings. I find them really detailed and colourful. I find it infasinating aswell, on how he was the one who created scenes and backgrounds for Disney films. For this image it took me a while to re-create it. Because of the colours and the shapes. I had to blend some many colours such as; pinks, reds and purples. And use a ruler to make sure the buildings and roofs were the exact same. Overall, am really impressed how it's finished.
From all the looking and researching on Eyvind Earle, i decided to take a break from him and do some sketch work on William Morris. This page i spilt it into two sections, so i can draw one image on one side then another on the next. The images i'd chosen were templates that William Morris used for his wallpapers. I began by drawing them out in pencil then collage them in different materials. After that i went over the outlines in black marker to bring them out more.
Furthermore, i did some more research on William Morris's work. By printing off more images, which i was intrested in. The three images i'd printed off were based on flower and pattern work. I split my page into three so i can stick my images down and then try re-creating them. Successfully, i managed to create them using a ordinary pencil and shading.
Here is another page of some William Morris's nature pieces. I printed two images which I look interested in and began to sketch them out. With various pages covered in watercolours or coloured pencils. I thought about doing black ink and shading for this page. Overall, it does look impressive in my opinion.
Next page, i wanted to do more Eyvind Earle's work. So i choose a image i liked then began to sketch it out. Then colour it in with watercolour paints, because the image has some colours which needed to be blended and mixed together. It isn't actually like the image, you can see the areas what needed adjusting. To be quite honest it was a hard image to re-create.
Further on the project, we was then told to work on Martha Armitage and her designs of wallpaper. To start this artist research, i began with creating a page with some facts and sketches about her work. Taken from this website http://hamiltonweston.com/
Part for the Martha Armitage research page, i printed some images off and stuck them down onto the page. Then, drew some sketches of Martha's work.
Our next artist to research was Timourous Beasties, which are two brothers who work as wallpaper and textile designers.
There style of work is mostly pattern and repeating. They do use some bold colours such as; reds, blues, pinks, purples etc. For my next page of research, i printed off a image of bees. Which the Timourous Beaties use for repeating pattern. And i created my own next to it, but this time i used there company symbol for my repeating pattern.
When looking through Timourous Beaties work, ive noticed some unusual images like there pattern and colour work. On the image it looks intresting, because of the affect it gives such as; paint running into different directions, giving off shapes and colours.
I tried attempting the same thing, but unfortanly the results i got wasn't what i expected.

After completing my research for Martha Armitage and Timourous Beasties. I began to look through my sketchbook from the beginning. And started to collect ideas for my canvas. My plan is to create two canvas's one with William Morris and Eyvind Earle's work mixed together. Then another one showing Martha Armitage and Timourous Beaties's work. I started to create a little idea page in my sketchbook.
I did attempt my first idea on my canvas, which was to have the similar background with the butterflies. But i added Buff Binder and collage to mine. I started off with a bright yellow colour, for my background colour. But it was too bright, so i toned it down a little. By adding green, to make it into Lime colour. Overall, which looks good.

Once the Buff Binder was dry and stuck down, then i drawn out my butterflies on newspaper. Followed by adding screwed up newspaper balls onto the butterflies, to make it look a little intresting. However, i did start to get fed up with looking at images and copying them into my style. So i decided to add something of my own, onto my canvas. I went out and bought some craft samples, which were flowers. And with the image showing a mature background. I added the flowers onto it, making it look 3D.
Even though, my canvas was starting to look good. I still thought it needed more added to it, to help with the spare gaps. So i looked back at my idea page and Martha Armitage research. Collected some ideas and then drawn them out onto the canvas. I chosen felt tips for these drawings, because of the brightness they give also Martha using some bright colours in her work.
With getting used to a canvas, i really wanted to create another one. But this time show William and Eyvind's work, all on one canvas like before. Again, i started off by creating a idea page on what is going to be on the canvas.
Beginning with the image of Sleeping Beauty, through the window with the nature in the background. But only use the window and wall, then add the rose and the purple colour in the back into the window. Finishing off with the blue flower pattern inside the bricks. To make the wall stand out more, with the colour being black. Overall, am really impressed with myself on how i've created this canvas. Using pastels and coloured pencils, with not being confident using them.
Next, we all had to create some samples made either by Lino, Tracings, Etchings etc. I decided to choose Lino cutting. Because Lino is great and better to create samples in my opinion. With just your drawing on the lino, cut how you want it to look with shading and dark areas. Then covering it with either one or two colours, after that placing under the roller to create a sample. My drawing was a tile called 'M' by William Morris.
I started off with a bright green colour, but once i placed my lino under the roller. I was told by Lina (Printing Teacher) that bright green was never shown in William's work. His colours were more dark. So then i began mixing 2 to 3 colours to create the colours William used. Such as; Browns, Greys, Dark Greens, Maroon etc.
If i'd had to choose which piece of work i thought was brilliant, i would choose this one. 'Three Noble Horses' by Eyvind Earle. Because this piece took me a day and half, so many hours to create. I used acrylic paints and watercoloured paints, which these paints leave boldness and easy to blend with. Started off by sketching out the horses then finishing off painting in everything, leaving the background till last which i found easy.
Finally, came ideas for my final piece in this project. I chose to create a painting onto a canvas, i did some more research on Eyvind Earle's work. Eventually, i found a painting he created called 'Grey Mountains.' (As shown below.)
I re-created this image and then later on began painting it onto my canvas. I used watercolour paints and arcylic. Overall, i am really pleased with how my painting has turned out. It looks exactly like the image, but i did have an idea to add some of William Morris's patterns. Onto the painting so it shows two pieces of both artist's work, Eyvind Earle and William Morris.

To make the canvas more like my work, i decided to add some William Morris's patterns. I added the patterns in some areas around the canvas, try to make it look intresting. Then all around the edges, overall i am very pleased how the canvas looks and how long it took me to create it.
